Is admissions need-blind for international students?

W&L’s financial resources are limited, and while full financial aid is available to international students, it is not possible for us to meet the need of all admissable international students.  Therefore, international students’ financial resources may be a factor in the admission committee’s decision concerning their candidacy for admission.


What are the minimum TOEFL and IELTS requirements?

TOEFL: 100 for iBT, 250 for computer-based, and 600 on the paper-based exam.  IELTS minimum score is 7.0.


How many international students are admitted?

Admission to Washington and Lee University is highly selective.  In 2009-2010 admissions cycle, only 19% of the 6,600 applications received were accepted.  We admitted 43 out of  572 international student applications.


How many international students attend Washington and Lee University?

Approximately 75 undergraduate students are non-U.S. residents.  Another 43 students are dual citizens or U.S. permanent residents.  Forty-seven foreign countries are represented with large numbers from Argentina, Bulgaria, China, and South Korea.

Yes, we accept all Common Application supplements. You may use the Common App teacher recommendation form and the secondary school report form with your Washington and Lee application.

What do I need to do to apply for the Johnson Scholarship, and when should I do it?

The deadline for the Johnson Scholarship is December 1st.

Applying for the Johnson Scholarship is non-binding.  Therefore, you do not need to apply Early Decision to be a candidate for the Johnson Scholarship.  Regular Decision candidates are eligible for consideration, provided we receive their complete admission application along with their separate Johnson Scholarship application (one additional essay) by December 1st.

You may apply for Early Decision and the Johnson Scholarship; materials for each are due on the respective deadline.

A complete application for the Johnson Scholarship consists of:

  • W&L Application Parts 1 and 2 or the Common Application and W&L’s Supplement to the Common Application
  • An official copy of your high school transcript
  • Official score reports from the SAT I (W&L’s code is: 5887) or ACT with its writing test (4430)
  • Two Teacher recommendations
  • One Guidance Counselor recommendation
  • The Johnson Scholarship Application
  • Financial Aid Paperwork by March 2nd

If you wish to apply for Early Decision and the Johnson Scholarship, you must submit:

  • W&L Application Parts 1 and 2 or the Common Application and W&L’s Supplement to the Common Application
  • An official copy of your high school transcript
  • Official score reports from the SAT I (W&L’s code is: 5887) or ACT with its writing test (4430)

Are SATII subject tests required?

Two SAT II Subject tests are recommended, though not required, for all applicants.

The only exceptions are:

  • Home-schooled Applicants – Require 5 SAT II Subject Tests
  • International Applicants – no SAT II subject tests required
  • Transfer Applicants – no SAT II Subject tests required
