How competitive is admission?

Transfer admission to W&L is highly competitive.  Successful transfer applicants normally have at least a 3.0 GPA in a rigorous course of study.  Typically, admitted transfer applicants have a high school record comparable to that of a successful first year applicant.

How do I apply to Washington and Lee University?

Transfer applicants should submit a complete Common Application for Transfer Students.  All application materials are due by November 1 for winter term enrollment (January) and by April 1 for fall term enrollment (September).


Does Washington and Lee offer ESL or Intensive English Programs?

No.  It is expected that international students will have a high level of English proficiency.  The Writing Center and department tutors are valuable resources and provide wonderful help when in need.


Can I receive college credit for my high school course work?

What type of international student organizations are on campus?

Amnesty International, Caribbean Society, English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), International House, International Relations Association, Multicultural Student Association, Nicaragua Project, Onyx, Pan Asian Association for Cultural Exchange, SAIL International Development and Relief Group, Student Association for International Learning (SAIL), SAIL International Student Association, SAIL Outreach Committee, Spanish House, Turkish Generals, and World’s Humane Youth.


What if I already attend another university, can I apply as a transfer or first year student?

For students currently attending university, you may only apply as a transfer.  Once you enroll as a full-time undergraduate student at another university, you may not be considered again for first year admission.  To apply as a transfer, please follow the guidelines listed here.  Transfer admission is also highly selective, and generally we have space available to accept 10-20 students each year from 100+ transfer applications.  No merit scholarships are available for transfer students and need-based aid awards are extremely limited or unavailable for all transfers, international or domestic.


What is the annual cost to attend Washington and Lee?

The overall cost of attendance for 2011-2012 is $56,400.  This includes room, board, tuition, fees, books, supplies, personal expenses, travel, and health insurance.


What is the average financial aid package for international students?

The average financial aid package to an international student for 2009-2010 was $45,064.  However, financial aid awards can vary for each international student, depending on family income and financial resources.  The financial aid packages can range from a few thousand dollars to the full cost of attendance for international students.
